The Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra Inc. regularly orders birth, marriage and death certificates from the civil register of England and Wales using index references supplied by users.

Orders are sent by e-mail to England every Wednesday during the period that the HAGSOC Library is open. Certificates usually take between 2 to 3 weeks to be received.

    Availability

The service is available to both members and non-members of the Society.

    Cost

    Members: $25
    Non-members: $30.

Any 'profits' from the scheme contribute to the Society's ability to buy reference material such as the English probate indexes and the 1881 census.

    Application

Details of the required Certificates from the General Register Office (previously St Catherine's House) indexes must be completed on a pro-forma located in the Library in a folder marked GRO CERTIFICATE SERVICE. Payment for the Certificates is to be made in advance. A Receipt will be issued by the Library Supervisor. This receipt should be presented to the Supervisor when the Certificates are collected.

Details to be included on the pro-forma include:

    • Type of Certicate (Birth, Death or Marriage)
    • Year
    • Quarter
    • Surname
    • Given names
    • Registration district
    • Volume
    • Page number

This information is mandatory and should be entered exactly as in the Index. Do not add additional information that may be known, eg. extra given names, as the application may be rejected at the Family History Centre, General Register Office.
