Penny Graham: Secret Lives and Hidden Families

penny graham

Presentation: As a child and a young adult, Penny was given an account of her parents' families and their traditional upper middle class British background. Then unexplained events caused her to progressively question the elements of that neat little packaged history, until finding the truth became one of the driving forces of her life, and led her on a voyage of discovery that would last for nearly 30 years. Her book Whatever Remains describes this voyage and the surprising results. Much of the research for the book was done by Penny's husband, long-time HAGSOC member Lindsay Graham, using resources in Canberra and overseas.

Biography: Penny had an unusual childhood -- a lot of travel and very little formal schooling. Her mother died when Penny was 10, and the family (her father and 2 older brothers) then settled in Perth. Her relationships with her family (then and now) can best be described as chequered. After raising 4 sons in Sydney and Canberra, Penny worked in ACT Health, the Department of the Senate and finally in the Commonwealth Department of Health, managing health promotion programs across Australia. Since retirement, she has been active in U3A, is a keen cyclist and enjoys writing, walking, history and current affairs.
